Prone to Wander

Hebrews 4:12 - "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword."
The writer of Hebrews gives us the powerful metaphor of a sword fight with God! God is the expert at sword fighting; we are the novice. God will win every time. God's victory, however, leads to true healing. God pierces to the deepest level of body, soul, and spirit. God's sword reaches to our hearts. God wields the sword, not as a warrior, but as a surgeon. God's sword reveals our innermost thoughts and impulses. We cannot hide from God. Specifically for the author of Hebrews, God knows our capacity to fall away from faith, to surrender to temptation, to cease running the race. The God who cuts us, however, is also the God who offers mercy and grace.
I am reminded of what the 18th century hymn writer Robert Robinson said in the classic hymn "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing":
O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here's my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.
We may wander individually and institutionally, however, the God who yields a sharp double-edged sword can and will take our hearts and seal them if only we follow his Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ.
