Kairos is a laity-led and clergy-supported Christian ministry that seeks to transform the environment inside prisons and to support the incarcerated in creating and sustaining strong, supportive Christian communities within the prison. Kairos works to achieve this goal by conducting two weekend-long retreats, modeled after the Cursillo movement, each year in each prison and through monthly reunions and weekly small group meetings.

Kairos at FUMC is headed up by Martin Butler. He encourages men and women to get involved with this organization. He says the following about Kairos at FUMC:
We hope to have many new faces to join us for the team meetings, and for the weekend. The team meetings allow all team members to get to know one another, and to bond into a tight group through sharing in Bible Scriptures and praying together. We also have food items brought in for the meetings, so we are able to eat together. The teams consist of the inside team and the outside team (men only on the inside team of the men’s unit, and women only on the inside team of the women’s unit). The outside team supports the inside team with prayers and running supplies from the base church to the prison facility. Team meetings are important so that the team can bond and get to know one another.
The part I like about Kairos is that we actually follow up with the residents in prayer and share times up to three times a month. We have two Kairos weekends per year in the men’s unit, and also two in the women’s unit.
