“Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world” What does this phrase really mean? The word conform comes from the Greek word “schema”, which means to make, or conform to the same pattern. Another scripture that helps illuminate this idea is 1 Peter 1:13-15, which says: “Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled…do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance…be holy in all you do.” The same chapter goes on, “have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.”
The pattern of this world is to be always looking out for our own interests. That is the evil desire to which we must not conform. We are called to love one another sincerely and deeply, and that is the hardest thing and the most important thing about being a Christian and that is the way to be transformed. Loving other people when we don’t want to, when we’re scared to, when we’re angry, this is the sacrifice that God requires of us, if we want to know and do his will.
